Press Release: Head of Presidential Administration Viktor Medvedchuk Receives US Deputy Secretary of State Steven Pifer OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT OF UKRAINE November 7 , 2002
On November 7 Head of Presidential Administration Viktor Medvedchuk received US Deputy Secretary of State Steven Pifer. They discussed a variety of issues involving Ukrainian-American bilateral relations, including Ukraine's preparation for the NATO summit in Prague set for the end of November, 2002, and the report of the American-British group of experts who visited Ukraine last month at the invitation of the Ukrainian side to investigate allegations that Ukraine might have sold "Kolchuha" radar systems to Iraq. Steven Pifer noted that the United States are interested in the development of Ukrainian-NATO relations and the approval of documents that would mark a new area of cooperation between the 2 countries. The Head of Presidential Administration pointed out that Ukraine had demonstrated unprecedented openness during the American and British experts' visit to Ukraine providing them with all the necessary information and creating proper working conditions. At the same time the Ukrainian side in its preliminary evaluation of the report disagrees with its main conclusions saying that Ukraine did not provide the experts with satisfactory evidence that the transfer of "Kolchuha" systems to Iraq had not or could not have taken place. Viktor Medvedchuk also informed Steven Pifer about Ukraine's determination to follow the course of European and Euro Atlantic integration and about the measures on preparation for the upcoming talks between Ukraine and NATO.
