Minister of Foreign Affairs Calls for the
Return of UNIKOM Observers

IRAQI MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

March 15, 2003

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Naji Sabri called on UN Secretary - General to interfere to cancel the withdrawal decision of UNIKOM observers to carry out their mission to deter any border violations and monitor any aggressive acts committed by American Troops mobilized in Kuwait.

In a letter addressed to UN Secretary - General, Dr. Sabri said that the withdrawal of UNICOM observers is regarded as a measure which is incompatible with UN and SC resolutions in peace keeping.

He added that UNICOM was established in accordance with Para. 5 of 687 Resolution in 1991 to monitor any aggressive acts, referring to US aggressive build - up in Kuwait which constitutes a flagrant violation of international law, UN Charter and SC resolutions.
