A statement by Spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs on (UNMOVIC),(IAEA) activities

IRAQI MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

February 24, 2003

 

1. IAEA Inspection Team:

A. Group I, was a 2-inspector team, led by the Canadian George Hilly, left Al-Qanat hotel at 8:40 a.m., and arrived at Alkarama, Alrazi and Alyarmouk state companies, as well as Alfateh site, all of which are MIC’s companies. The purpose of the inspection was to ascertain of the use of the ANCO magnets by these companies. The team inquired about the places where these magnets were used, about the supplying party and what the plans are for them. The inspection took 3.5h, and then the team returned to the Hotel.

B. Group II, was a 3-inspector team, led by the British Nil Colfield, left Al-Qanat hotel at 8:30 a.m., and arrived at the MIC’s Almilad State Company, some 25km south of Baghdad. The inspection was intended to ascertain about the magnet, where to be used, its specifications and whether there are indigenous plans. The inspection took about 2 hours. Then the team returned to the Hotel.

C. Group III, was a 3-inspector team, led by the Canadian Victor, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:40 a.m., the team took a radiological survey, by devices mounted on a vehicle, for various regions of Alkarkh side of Baghdad. The survey took about 3 hours. The team then returned to the Hotel.

2. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (biological):

A. Group I, was a 10-inspector team, led by the British Roger Cook, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:40 a.m., and arrived at the shell destruction site at Alazizya. The chief inspector asked, upon arrival, to go to the digging site and inquired about the excavated shells, the places where the shells were buried, how many dug sites, what was the material the shells were filled with before the destruction and what was the chemical material used in destruction. The team toured throughout the site and took pictures for all digging sites. The inspection took about 4 hours. The team then returned to the Hotel.

B. Group II, in Mosul, was comprised of 8-inspectors, left Nineveh Palace Hotel, under the Dutch Yan Rosnick, at 8:40 a.m., and arrived at the Engineering College of Mosul University, held a meeting with concerned people in the College and asked when the environment lab was established and about the activities and the researches, its tests to the drinking and sewage waters, whether there are cooperation with other parties, how many personnel and the procedure of financing. The team then toured the labs. The inspection took one hour. Then returned to the Hotel.

3. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Chemical):

This team was comprised of (7) inspectors, left Al-Qanat Hotel, under the Argentinean Karlouse, at 9:00 a.m., and arrived at the Technology Institute, and the Technical College. The team held a meeting with the Dean of the Institute and inquired about its scientific departments, number of teaching staff, the students, kinds of researches, the connection of the Institute with other circles, the relation with the MIC, then the team held a meeting with the dean of the Technical College and asked about the many years of study, number of the teaching staff, the departments, its relation with other colleges and ministries and whether there is a connection with the Ministry of Defense. The team toured throughout the two facilities. The inspection took about 2:25 hours. They returned to the Hotel.

4. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Missiles):

A. Group I, was a 4-inspection team, left Al-Qanat Hotel, under the French Kay, at 8:00 a.m. the team arrived at Al-Mo’atasim Factory of Al-Rushed State Company, one of the MIC’s companies, located some 80km south of Baghdad. The team held a meeting with the Factory’s concerned people and asked about the missile’s component and parts produced at the Factory, the missile’s electrical tests, works of the quality control and what kind of fuel is used and then, the team toured throughout the installations and put tags on some of the equipments and the missiles. The inspection took about (4) hours. Then, returned to the Hotel.

B. Group II, was a 4- inspector team, left Al-Qanat Hotel, under the Bangladeshi Mohammed Saif Al-Islam at 8:30 a.m. and arrived at Al-Izz Company, one of the MIC’s companies, some 7km north of Baghdad. The team held a meeting with the Company’s Director and asked about the project implemented at the Company, about the work of the control and guidance of the missiles, whether the company has future projects, and whether the researches involve the development or the production. The team, then toured throughout the Company’s facilities. The inspection took 4 hours, the team then returned to the Hotel.

C. Group III, was a 3-inspector team, left Al-Qanat Hotel under the U.S. Paul Clifford, at 9:30 a.m. and arrived at the MIC’s Al-Harith State Company, located some 50km north of Baghdad. The purpose of the inspection was to put the tags on Volga missiles .The team, then toured through the maintenance workshops of the missiles. The inspection took about 3:50 hours and the team returned to the Hotel.

D. Group IV, was a 2-inspector team, left Al-Qanat Hotel under the U.S. Kenneth Grot, at 8:30 a.m., and arrived at the MIC’s Al-Qaqa and Al-Rushed State Companies. At site I, the team visited Al-Qaid Factory of Al-Rushed State Company, where inspectors put the tags on the mixture container, some 30gal., in capacity. At site II, Al-Rushed State Company, the team held a meeting with the officials and asked about the special declarations of the Company, and checked them. The inspection took 2 hours, the team returned to the Hotel.

5. UNMOVIC Joint Team (Mosul):

This team was consisted of (5) inspectors, led by the British Tony. Left the Hotel at 9:00 a.m. and arrived at a military unite site (for supply and transportation) belongs to the M.D. The team inspected the site including all its facilities: shelters, fuel tanks, etc. Then the team took a tour by vehicles. The inspection took (2) hours, afterwards the team returned to the Hotel.
