A statement by Spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs on (UNMOVIC),(IAEA) activities

IRAQI MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

February 22, 2003

 

1. IAEA Inspection Team:

A. Group I:

The group, consisting of (4) inspectors headed by Mr. Nil Frank (British), set out of Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:35 a.m., and arrived at Al-Qadissiyya State Company, one of the companies of Military Industrialization Commission (MIC). It is located in Al-Yousfiyya, some 25 km to the south of Baghdad. The group inspected all the workshops and stores of the Company, familiarized itself with the activities of the Company, visited the sites of evacuation, cancelled the map the inspectors have, and checked the marked machines. The visit lasted for three hours, and then the group returned to Al-Qanat Hotel.

B. Group II:

The group, consisting of (4) inspectors headed by Mr. Olta (South African), set out of Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30 a.m., and arrived at the 7th of April State Company, one of the companies of Military Industrialization Commission (MIC), some 25 km to the east of Baghdad. The group inspected all the facilities of the Company; the workshops, stores, administrative buildings, and service units. It also compared the declarations with the previous ones. Inspection took about three hours and a half, and then the group returned to Al-Qanat Hotel.

C. Group III:

The group, consisting of (2) inspectors headed by Mr. Victor (Canadian), set out of Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:40 a.m. It conducted a radiological survey for several sites at Abu Ghraib area that included Dairies State Company/ the Ministry of Industry, Al-Thahab Al-Abyath village, the residential units at the project of Aqarqouf Electricity Supply Station/ Commission Of Electricity, Al-Soumoud Factory that belongs to MIC. The device of air sampling installed in Al-Yarmouk Company was withdrawn. The Radiological survey process lasted for three hours, and then the group returned to Al-Qanat Hotel.

2. UNMOVIC Inspection Team/ Missiles:

A. Group I:

The group, consisting of (3) inspectors headed by Mr. Max (French), set out of Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00 a.m., and arrived at the destroyed Station for Limiting Examination of Missiles, located in Al-Amiriyya area, some 70 km to the west of Baghdad. The group made a tour by vehicles among the ruins of the sites, and then went towards Badr State Company which belongs to MIC, some (30) km to the south of Baghdad. It put stickers on the machines of programmed vertical turnery because they were used in the production of some of the parts of the Al-Soumoud missile. Inspection lasted for two hours, and then the group returned to Al-Qanat Hotel.

B. Group II:

The group, consisting of (9) inspectors headed by Mr. Ken Croon (British), set out of Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00 a.m., and arrived at Ibn Al-Haitham site, which belongs to Al-Karamah State Company, one of the companies of MIC. It is located in Al-Taji, some 10 km to the north of Baghdad. The group inspected all the site's facilities to know the whole equipment that are related to Al-Soumoud missile. It also put stickers on under-manufacturing missiles, as well as their engines and warheads. Inspection took about four hours and a quarter, and then the group returned to Al-Qanat Hotel.

C. Group III:

The group, consisting of (5) inspectors headed by Mr. Kay (French), set out of Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30 a.m., and arrived at Al-Nasr Al-Adheem State Company, one of the companies of Military Industrialization Commission (MIC), which is located in Al-Doura area, in Baghdad. On arrival, the group held a meeting with the persons in charge of the Company and inquired about the missiles parts that had been manufactured . Afterwards, the group checked the declarations of the Company, made a tour inside the factories of the Company, and checked the stickers. The inspection took about two hours and a quarter, and then the group returned to Al-Qanat Hotel.

3. UNMOVIC Inspection Team/ Biological:

A. Group I:

The group, consisting of (4) inspectors headed by Mr. Roko (American), set out of Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:35 a.m., and arrived at Al-Razi site which belongs to the Ministry of Industry. The group destroyed the planting means using crematory, and some others by dealing them with water. Afterwards, the group went towards another site which was a laboratory for food examination at Al-Jadiriyya area, which belongs to Ministry of Trade where it destroyed the chemical items by the materials used in cleaning and a device for sterilization. The inspection lasted for three hours, and then the group returned to Al-Qanat Hotel.

B. Group II:

The group, consisting of (8) inspectors headed by Mr. Roseneck (Dutch), set out of Nineveh Palace Hotel at 8:40 a.m., and arrived at Mosul College of Medicine where it met with the Dean of the College and a number of specialists, and inquired about the departments of the College, the number of the faculty specially the staff of microbiology, their degrees, the number of postgraduate students. It also visited the laboratories and animals’ barn. Afterwards, the group visited the College of Pharmacy where it met with its Dean and inquired about the College, its departments, the most important researches in clinical pharmacy and industrial pharmacy departments. Later, it visited the laboratories of chemistry, biology, and microbiology, and the laboratory for the researches of postgraduate students. The visit lasted for nearly three hours and a half, and then the group returned to Nineveh Palace Hotel.

4. The UNMOVIC Inspection Team/ the Joint in Baghdad:

The team, consisting of (5) inspectors headed by Mr. Paolo (Brazilian), set out of Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00 a.m., and arrived at the examination laboratory of liquid petrol, which belongs to the Ministry of Defense. The team held a meeting with the person in charge of the site, and inquired about the full name of the site, the party to which it belongs, the duty of the site, the date at which it removed to its current place. Later, the team toured all the site's sections . The inspection lasted for an hour, and then the team returned to the Hotel.

5. UNMOVIC Inspection Team in Mosul:

The team, consisting of (4) inspectors headed by Mr. Monkil (Thailandi), set out of Nineveh Palace Hotel at 9:00 a.m., and arrived at Al-Kindi State Company, one of MIC’s companies. The team put stickers on two pieces of equipment at the Company. The visit lasted for 45 minutes, and then the team returned to the Hotel.

6. UNMOVIC Inspection Team/ Chemical:

It was supposed that the team would take off on board of a helicopter at Al-Rasheed Airport, but due to bad weather, the visit was cancelled.

7. U2 Reconnaissance Plane:

At 10:15 a.m., U2 reconnaissance plane entered Iraq’s aerial spaces, and reconnoitered many areas inside Iraq. The plane left Iraq’s aerial spaces at 4:15 p.m. Reconnaissance process lasted for six hours.
