A statement by Spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs on (UNMOVIC),(IAEA) activities

IRAQI MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

February 20, 2003

 

1. U-2 Aerial Reconnaissance:

At 9:55a.m, the U-2 aerial reconnaissance plane entered the Iraqi space. The said plane reconnoitered several areas. It left at 4:25p.m. The reconnaissance lasted for 6.20h.

2. IAEA Inspection Team:

A. Group I: consisting of (4) inspectors and led by the Canadian inspector, Neal Frank, the group set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30a.m, and arrived at Al-Eiz State Company, one of the MIC companies, in Al-Taji area, 10 km north of Baghdad. The group checked the buildings and conformed them with the plot they have. The visit lasted for two hours and a half, after which the group went back to the Hotel.

B. Group II: Two helicopters took off from Al-Rasheed base boarding seven inspectors and led by George Haily, due to the bad weather, the task was cancelled, and the group returned to the Hotel.

C. Group III: Consisting of (4) inspectors and led by Nel Colefield, an English inspector, the group set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00a.m, and arrived at Al-Soumoud & Ibn Al-Haitham sites, belong to Al-Karama Company, one of the MIC companies, and Al-Shaikly stores which belong to the Atomic Energy Organization . The group visited Al-Soumoud site in Abou-Graib area and got acquainted with the streaming operating machine and asking about the time spent in transforming this machine to this site. After that they got acquainted with detailed specifications of this machine. Then the group headed for the site of Ibn-Al-Haitham, in Al-Taji area. The group acquainted with the new streaming operating machine and asking about the date of receiving this machine, the location of its installation, and from where they received it. Then the group headed for Al-Shakily stores in Al-Twaitha area, and visited one of the stores there and took two aluminium tubes from that store. The visit lasted for three hours and a half, after which the group went back to the Hotel.

D. Group IIII: Consisting of (3) inspectors and led by Victor, a Canadian inspector, the group set out from Al- Qanat Hotel at 8:50 a.m. the group conducted radiological survey, using survey devices carried by vehicles for many companies, government offices, and military units in Al-Nahrwan area, included Al-Basil State Company, 7April State Company, one of MIC companies, and the Department of Trucks Repairing which belongs to the State Company of Distributing Oil Products. The visit lasted for three hours, after which the group went back to Hotel.

3. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Missile):

A. Group I: The group set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:50a.m, consisted of (4) inspectors headed by the French inspector Jacque. It arrived at Al- Quds Factory, which belongs to Al-Karama State Company, one of MIC companies. . It held a meeting with the officials of this Factory and inquired about the type of the guiders used for Al-Soumoud missile, how they assemble those guiders, and how many missiles which used those guiders. Then it made a tour through the buildings of this site. The group inventoried the guiders there and also checked the stickers placed on the equipments. The visit lasted for three hours, after which the group went back to the Hotel.

B. Group II: The group set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30a.m, consisted of (4) inspectors and headed the Ukrainian inspector (Andre). The group arrived at Al-Eshaqi site which belongs to the Ministry of Defense, 55km to the north of Baghdad. The group placed seals on the missiles there. The inspection went on for 4.30h, and then the group went back to the Hotel.

C. Group III: The group set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30a.m, consisted of (3) inspectors and headed by the American inspector (Kenneth kroan). The group arrived at Al-Soumoud Factory and to Ibn-Alhaitham; both sites belong to Al-Karama State Company of the MIC. In Al-Soumoud Factory, the inspectors checked the seals as they placed ones on some of the equipment there, whereas, they sealed a machine which has been broken for (10) years, in Ibn Al-Haitham Factory. The inspection went on for (4) hours, and then the group went back to the Hotel.

D. Group IV: The group set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30a.m, consisted of (3) inspectors and headed by the Bangladeshi inspector (Mohammed Saif Aldeen). The group arrived at Ibn-Al-Haitham site of Al-Karama State Company - one of the MIC’s. The inspectors held a meeting with the site officials where they discussed the concerning details of the branch systems of Al-Soumoud missiles. Then, the inspectors toured the site workshops to view the major parts of the said missile. The inspection went on for (5) hours, and then the group returned to the Hotel.

E. Group V: The group set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30a.m, consisted of (3) inspectors and headed by the Argentines inspector (Korjay Kateesa). The group arrived at Al-Karama State Company headquarters and at Alsemoud site which belong to the same company - one of the MIC’s. The inspectors sealed the equipment at the headquarters as they inquired about the total number of the warheads manufactured in the Company. At Al-Soumoud site, the inspectors inquired about the test carried out on the turbine pump system of Al-Soumoud engine. The inspection went on for (3) hours, and then the group went back to the Hotel.

4. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Chemical):

The team left Al-Qanat Hotel at 10:00a.m, consisted of (5) inspectors and headed by the English inspector (Steve Alison). It arrived at Al-Aella Factory for Detergents Production (private sector) in Algarma area, 40km north of Baghdad. The team met with one of the laborers and inquired about the total number of the laborers, the total of those who has higher education degrees , means of obtaining the equipment for producing the detergents and the production capability. Also, the team visited the management unit, selvonic acid production unit, sulfur storage, bottles production unit, and the junk yard. The team used a metal detection device (using x-ray). The inspection went on for 1.15h, and then the team went back to the Hotel.

5. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Biological):

A. Group I: at 10:00a.m, a helicopter took off from Al-Rasheed Aairport with (5) inspectors on board, headed by (Philip Mcnoon). The group made an aerial reconnaissance over Abu-Graib areas (College of Agriculture, the State Board for Agriculture Protection, potato storages, Al-Kindy Company for Veterinary Vaccinations Productions) for 15 minutes. Then, it headed for Amryat Al-Faluja area, it made an aerial reconnaissance over Saddam State Company for 10 minutes, then it went back to Al-Rasheed Airport. The reconnaissance lasted for (2) hours.

B. Group II: at 9:30a.m, a helicopter took off from Al-Rasheed Airport with (4) inspectors on board. It arrived at Alcoholic Factory in Missan and inspected Maroak Factory for Beer Production as they checked the seals placed on the equipment. The inspection went on for 1.30h, and then the helicopter took off again heading for Basrah. It landed at Al-Basrah International Airport and spent the night there.

C. Group III: at 10:20a.m, a helicopter took off from Al-Rasheed Airport with (2) inspectors on board. It arrived at Balad area and took photos of Al-Baker Air Base and the neighboring areas of the said base. Then, it went back to Al-Rasheed Airport. The aerial reconnaissance lasted for (50) minutes.
