A statement by Spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs on (UNMOVIC),(IAEA) activities

   IRAQI MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

February 18, 2003  

1. IAEA Inspection Team:

 A. Group I: It was a 4-inspector group, led by the English inspector Neil Franck, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30 a.m., and arrived at Al-Tahadi State Company, one of the MIC’s companies, located in Al-Fodailia area in the suburbs of Baghdad. The group inspected the Electromagnetic lab building, inquiring about the Company’s typical production. The group also inspected all the buildings of the company using radiological survey device.

   The visit lasted for three and a half hours, then the group went back to the Hotel.   

B. Group II: It was a 4-inspectors group, led by the Canadian inspector George Hailey, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30 a.m. The group arrived at Al-Naser Al-Adeam Company, one of the MIC’s companies, located in Al-Dora area. The group inspected all the facilities and inquired about the new buildings which are being constructed, the equipment that are being produced in the company and for what reason they are produced, and matched the map with the buildings of the site.

   The visit lasted for four and a half hours, then the group went back to the Hotel.  

C. Group III: It was a 3-inspector group, led by the English inspector Victor, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:40 a.m. The group toured round the following areas carrying out radiological survey with equipment carried by vehicles: Al-Kadhimia, Sebaa Abkar and Hay Al-Rabee. The survey included farms, governmental offices, public areas and streets.

   The inspection lasted for two and a half hours, then the group went back to the Hotel.  

2. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Chemical):  

A. Group I: It was a 8-inspector group, led by the English inspector Steve Alanson, left the Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30 a.m., and arrived at Dar Al-Salam Company, private sector, located at Al-Karma area, 40km south of Baghdad. The group inquired about the production, the structure, the departments, the daily production and they also observed the production process. The company produces sulfuric acid at the time being.

   The inspection lasted for an hour and a half, then the group went back to the Hotel.  

B. Group II: It was a 19-inspector group, led by the Austrian inspector Harold Marhold, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:00 a.m., and arrived at Al-Muthanna site (abandoned) that belongs to Tareq State Company, one of the MIC’s companies, 100km to the north of Baghdad. Due to bad weather, the group could not carry out their mission.  

3. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Missiles):  

A. Group I: It was a 5-inspector group, led by the English inspector Ken Crofe, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30 a.m., and arrived at a military site that belongs to the MD, in Abu Ghraib area, to the west of Baghdad. The duty of the group was to place stickers on Al-Soumoud missiles.

   The inspection lasted for five and a half hours, then the group went back to the Hotel.  

B. Group II: It was a 3-inspector group, led by the English inspector Pole Clifford, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00 a.m., and arrived at Ibn Al-Haythem site that belongs to Al-Karama State Company, one of the MIC’s companies. It is located at Al-Tagee area, 10km north of Baghdad. The group inquired about some technical matters that concern Al-Soumoud missiles and the annual checkup operations that take place. Then the group placed stickers on a number of missiles.

   The inspection lasted for three hours, then the group went back to the Hotel.  

C. Group III: It was a 2-inspector group, led by the Turkish inspector Teamel, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30 a.m., and arrived at Al-Qaqa State Company, one of the MIC’s companies, 50km to the south of Baghdad. The group held a meeting with the people in charge of the company and asked about the Company’s work for the years (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002), demanded to know the structure of Al-Khalid Factory that belongs to the Company and what are the ways that are used to fill the warheads of Al-Soumoud & Al-Fateh missiles. Then the group inspected the workshops for filling the warheads, bombs and shields.

   The inspection lasted for three and a half hours, then the group went back to the Hotel.  

D. Group IV: It was a 3-inspector group, led by the French inspector Jack, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30 a.m., and arrived at Al-Hareth State Company, one of the MIC’s companies, in Al-Tagee area, 25km to the north of Baghdad. The group inquired about the relation of the Company in respect to Al-Soumoud & Alfateh missiles manufacturing, the sorts of maintenance for parts of the air defense missiles and checked the declarations.

   The inspection lasted for two and a half hours, then, it went back to the Hotel.  

E. Group V: It set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30 a.m. consisting of (2) inspectors, headed by the Spanish inspector Horay. It arrived at Al-Radhwan Company of the MIC in Khandhary area, 25km west of Baghdad. The group held a meeting with the Company’s officials inquired about the activities and the missiles’ parts manufactured in the company and checked the related declarations.

   The inspection lasted for two and a half hours, and then the group went back to the Hotel.  

4. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Biological):  

   It set out from Al-Qanat hotel at 8:00 a.m. consisting of (9) inspectors, headed by the American inspector (Erik). The team arrived at Al-Qadysia Dairy Factory of the MI in Al-Qadysia Province, 180km south of Baghdad. The team held a meeting with the officials in charge, and inquired about the number of workers in the Factory, the microbiology specialists, the number of refrigerated vehicles, the number of refrigerated storages, the kinds of production and the types of examinations that are carried out in the lab. Then, the team inspected all the facilities of the Factory.

   The inspection lasted for two hours, and then the team went back to the Hotel.  

5. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Joint) in Baghdad:

A. Group I: It set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00 a.m., and consisting of 6 inspectors, led by Brazilian inspector Polo Brito. It arrived at Al-Mansour State Company of the MIC’s, in Al-Khadhmia area. The team held a meeting with the officials there and inquired about the Company’s activities, the equipment seals, the supplying bodies and the production. Then, the team toured around the Company’s labs and equipment.

   The inspection lasted for an hour and half, then the team returned to the Hotel.  

B. Group II: it set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 3:00 p.m. consisting of (6) inspectors, headed by the Brazilian inspector Polo Brito. It arrived at Sa’ad State Company of the MIC, in Karadat Mariam area. The group made a radiological survey for the first floor of the Company’s building, then it took measures of the building from the outside.

   The survey process lasted for an hour. Then, the group went back to the Hotel.    

Interviews:   

   The IAEA inspection team asked to make individual meeting with two of Iraqi specialists in one of Baghdad’s hotels. The NMD informed the specialists with the time and place of the meeting and encouraged them to do so. Indeed the meetings were accomplished. The first meeting lasted for (2) hours whereas the other one lasted for (3) hours.

It is worth mentioning that the meetings were documented, using a tape recorder, by the specialists.
