A statement by Spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs on (UNMOVIC),(IAEA) activities

  IRAQI MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

February 17, 2003

 1- IAEA Inspection Team:

 A. Group I: It was a 4-inspector team, led by the Norwegian inspector Stoyner, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30a.m and arrived at Al-Nida State Company, one of the MIC’s companies. The team made a tour, where they checked the labeled machines and the stamps and overlooked the Company’s warehouses.

   The inspection lasted for 3 hours, and then the team returned to the Hotel.

 B. Group II: It was a 4-inspectors team, led by the Canaidian inspector Donald, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:35a.m. The team arrived at Al-Doura and Samarra areas and preformed a radiological survey.The survey included various companies, offices, and open areas.

   The survey process lasted for 3 hours, the team then returned to the Hotel.

 C. Group III: It was 4-inspector team, led by the British inspector Frank,left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:35a.m and arrived at Umm-Alma’arrik State Company and Thou-Elfiqar Factory, both connected to the MIC, where the team visited one of the Company’s chambers and viewed the machines at function and phases of the work. Also the team visited the Factory and viewed the machines in workshops, as well as the thermal ovens.

   The inspection lasted for 5 hours, afterward the team returned to the Hotel.

 

2. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Missiles):

 A. Group I: It was a 4-inspector team, led by the Bangladeshi inspector Mohammed Saiflu-Eslam, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:00a.m and arrived at Ebbnul-Haytham and Al-Soumoud sites, both connected to El-Karama State Company of the MIC, where they put tags on Al-Soumoud missile.

    The inspection lasted for five and a half hours. The team returned to the Hotel.

 B. Group II: It was a 3-inspector team, led by the Turkish inspector Sorein, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:00a.m and arrived at Al-Ameen Factory, which belongs to the MIC’s Al-Rasheed State Company. The team held a meeting with the people in charge of the Factory, where declarations pertaining to the Factory for the years 2000, 2001 and 2002, were discussed and scrutinized. Then the team visited one of the buildings which contained the big oven.

   The inspection lasted for two and a half hours. The team then returned to the Hotel.

 C. Group III: It was a 2-inspector team, led by the German inspector Gerhard, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:00a.m and arrived at Al-Moutasim Base Airfield of the Ministry of Defense. The team held a meeting at the base headquarters, where the technical aspects of the drone planes, were discussed. Afterward, the team visited the special bunker of these planes.

   The inspection lasted for 2 hours, and then the team returned to the Hotel.

 D. Group IV: It was a 2-inspector team, led by the Korean inspector Lee Geong, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:00a.m and arrived at Al-Asima Domestic Company (private sector). The team held a meeting with the Company’s Director and inquired about the technical parts manufactured by the Company; and asked about the facility the Company is dealing with and how much parts are demanded and the date of initiation the work. The team inspected the company’s workshops.

   The inspection lasted for 2 hours, and then the team returned to the Hotel.

 E. Group V: It was a 5-inspector team, led by the British inspector Poul, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:50a.m and arrived at the MIC’s Umel-Ma’arik State Company. The team held a meeting with the people in charge of the Company and asked then about the Company production of missiles’ parts, whether there is a factory for the molds , the buildings, the organizational framework, the items stored, and the declarations. Then the team inspected the building of the machines workshops and checked the tags on the machines.

   The inspection lasted for 5 hours, and then the team returned to the Hotel.

 3. UNMOVIC Joint Inspection Team (Mosul):

    This team was consisted of 10 inspectors, and was led by the British inspector Tony, left Nineveh Palace Hotel at 9:00a.m and arrived at the first group of Al-Hadar ammunition dumps and held a meeting with the commander, then the team inspected all the dumps using chemical verifying device.

   The inspection lasted for 6 hours, then the team returned to the Hotel.

 4. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Chemical):

 A. Group I: It was an 8-inspector team, led by the Austrian inspector Harold, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00a.m and arrived at Al-Muthana abandoned site of the MIC’s Tariq State Company. The group took samples from the barrels in which the mustard material was previously destroyed.

   The inspection lasted for two and a half hours. The group then returned to the Hotel.

 B. Group II: It was a 7-inspector team, led by the Irish inspector Shien McMmahon , left Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:30a.m and arrived at the Al-Zahef Al-Kabeer State Company of the MIC. The group held a meeting with the people in charge of the Company and inquired about the number of the sites, the number of the working personnel, key specializations, and the exporting their products. The group inspected all the company’s premises.

   The inspection lasted for 3 hours, then the group returned to the Hotel.

 5. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (biological):

   A helicopter took off, at 9:10a.m, from Al-Rasheed Airport with 6-inspector team on board led by the Dutch inspector Roseink, arrived at Bainulnahrian State Company for Seeds located at Al-Haweja north-east Baghdad. The team held a meeting with the people in charge of the Company and inquired about the Company’s establishment date, the past activity of the Company, kind of the trucks transporting the grain, the resource of the grain and time of receiving the grain. Then the team inspected inside and outside the Company and overlooked the production lines.

   The inspection lasted for one and a half hour, then the team returned to Al-Rasheed Airport.

 6. UNMOVIC Joint Inspection Team:

    This team left Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:30a.m and was consisted of 6 inspectors. The team arrived at the MIC’s Al-Zahifolkabeer State Company, located some 20km north of Baghdad. The team joined the chemical one, which was visiting the site. Then split off and went to inspect the marketing section and scrutinized the books. The team also inspected the Monitoring and Engineering Checking Directorate, and the Research and Development Directorate.

   The inspection lasted for two and a half hours, and then the team returned to the Hotel.

  7. Interviews:

    The IAEA team demanded to meet one of Iraqi specialists in one of Baghdad’s hotels. The Iraqi National Monitoring Department (NMD) informed the concerned specialist and encouraged him to be at the assigned place and time. The interview was individually accomplished and lasted for two and a half hours. The interview was documented by a tape recorder.

 8. U-2 Reconnaissance Airplane:

    At 11:55a.m this plane entered the Iraqi space and reconnoitered various parts of Iraq and left the Iraqi space at 4:25p.m. The whole operation lasted for 4.20 hours.
