A statement by Spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs on (UNMOVIC),(IAEA) activities

IRAQ MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

February 8, 2003

 

1. IAEA Inspection Team:

A.Group I: The group, consisting of (4) inspectors headed by Mr. Klamingo (Russian), set out of the Canal Hotel at 9:15 a.m., and arrived at Al-Doura area, in Baghdad, where it conducted a radio-active survey for the following places: Al-Doura Oil Refineries which belong to the Ministry of Oil, Al-Nasr Al-‘Adheem State Company which belongs to MIC, a military unit which belongs to Air Defense, and three private farms. The radio-active survey lasted for nearly three hours, and then the group returned to the Hotel.

B.Group II: The group, consisting of (3) inspectors headed by Mr. Brays (American), set out of the Canal Hotel at 9:00 a.m. The mission of the group was to set up two aerial filter devices for taking samples from air. These two devices were set up in the area of Al-Jadiriyya Scientific Center and 17th of April Company in Baghdad. Setting up process took about two hours and a half, and then the group returned to the Hotel.

2. UNMOVIV Inspection Team (Chemical):

The team, consisting of (6) inspectors headed by Mr. Steve (British), set out of the Canal Hotel at 8:45 a.m., and arrived at Al-Rasheed Water Project, which belongs to Baghdad Municipality. The team held a short meeting with one of the workers in the site, as there was no official due to today’s formal holiday. It asked a group of question concerning any changes that took place during the past four years, the number of the new pumps that are there, in the site, and the number of chlorine vials, the filled, the empty, and the broken ones. Afterwards, the team toured in all of the facilities of the site, took photographs for precipitation basins and drawing pumps. The visit took roughly an hour, and then the team returned to the Hotel.

3. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Biological):

The team, consisting of (12) inspectors headed by Mr. Jan Doznil (Dutch), set out of the Canal Hotel at 9:00 a.m., and arrived at Jur Al-Naddaf area, some 25 km to the south of Baghdad. The team visited two sites; the first was Jur Al-Naddaf Stores, which belong to Mesopotamia State Company for Grains where it met with the director of the Stores and inquired about the beginning of the site’s activity, the parties that are beneficial from the site before it had been used by Mesopotamia State Company, the party to which the Stores belong to, the address of the main company, and the way of cleansing grains. The second site was Grains Purification Factory, which belongs to the Atomic Energy Organization, where the gates of the stores were closed. The team entered to the stores from one of the holes in the stores and made sure of their contents where the stored items were the grains of parley. The visit lasted for nearly three hours and a half, and then the team went back to the Hotel.

4. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Missiles):

The team, consisting of (21) inspectors headed by Mr. Paul Clifford (British), set out of the Canal Hotel at 9:30 a.m., and arrived at Al-Waziriyyah area, in Baghdad, where inspection included a number of the following sites: the Central Workers Printery, which belongs to the General Union of Workers Unions, Al-Tahreer Institute, Al-Mu’atasim Center, which belongs to MIC, the Directorate of Environment Improvement and Protection, which belongs to the Council of Ministers, and Qatr Al-Nada Kindergarten, which belongs to the Ministry of Education. The team froze any movement in all the aforementioned sites. They were all inspected except some buildings whose keys were not available and stickers were put on them to be inspected next day. The visit took about four hours and twenty minutes, and then the team returned to the Hotel.

5. The Joint UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Mosul):

The team, consisting of (13) inspectors headed by Mr. Olla (Sweden), set out of Nineveh Palace Hotel at 9:00 a.m., and arrived at the Technical Institute in Mosul, which belongs to Technical Education Commission. The team held a meeting with the Institute’s director and asked him several questions, which were: What is the full name of the Institute? What is the relation of the Institute with the Iraqi universities and other institutes? Is there any relation between the Institute and the industrial projects? Are there any research projects in the Institute? What is the party that is responsible for financing the Institute? Where did you get the new equipment? How many years do the study need? Afterwards, the team toured in all the sections of the Institute (laboratories, workshops, stores, and study halls). The visit lasted for roughly three hours and a half, and then the team returned to the Hotel.

Interviews:

The IAEA requested to conduct an interview with an Iraqi specialist. The interview took place individually inside one of Baghdad’s hotels. The interview lasted for nearly two hours and a half.
