A statement by Spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs on (UNMOVIC),(IAEA) activities IRAQ MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS February 7, 2003
1. UNMOVIV Inspection Team (Chemical). The team set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00 a.m., consisting of (4) inspectors, headed by an English inspector (Steve). They reached to Al-Wethbba Water Project that belongs to Baghdad Water Department-Baghdad Municipality. They held a short meeting with an employee who was in patrol at the site, asking him a number of questions such as have you obtained any new equipment, what are the changes that took place since 1998, how many lines are used for water pumping purposes, what are the concentration ratio of the chlorine used, do you have record files of the chlorine consumption. The team toured through all the site facilities. The visit lasted for almost an hour, and then they went back to the Hotel. 2. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Missiles). The team set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:45 a.m., consisting of (3) inspectors, headed by an English inspector (Paul Clifford). They reached Al-Karamma State Company of the MCI, in Al-Wazeria area. Right after the team’s arrival, the head of the team held a meeting with the site officials. The questions were mainly about the specification standards and where does it take place, is it the same for all of Al-Karamma factories or is it a different one, are all the equipment that belong to the specification standards are available in the Company or are they in different places. Then, the team visited the stocks storages, the patterns building, the training building and the raw materials storages. The visit lasted for almost (2) hours, and then they went back to the Hotel. 3. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Biology). A. Group I (Aerial reconnaissance): An UNMOVIC helicopter took off from Al-rasheed base with (2) inspectors on board, at 10:00a.m. it soared over the following areas: Al-Ghalbya, Dyala, Al-khales, Al-Edhaim, Samarra (Samarra Drugs Factory) and Al-Dore (Salah Al-Deen State Company). During the reconnaissance, the team used photographic and video cameras. The reconnaissance operation lasted for about (3) hours, then it went back to Al-Rasheed base. B. Group II: It set out from Al-Qanat hotel at 8:15 a.m., consisting of (18) inspectors headed by the Holland inspector (Yan Rozenk). It arrived at an area that belongs to the private sector, 10km away from Kut city. The area that the team visited contains livestock field and fodder storage. The team used chemical materials detection device and a radioactive detecting device. The visit lasted for about (3) hours, and then the group went back to the hotel. 4. UNMOVIC inspection team (joint) It set out from Al-Qanat hotel at 9:50a.m consisting of (18) inspectors, headed by an English inspector (Williams). It arrived at the storages of the State Department for Agriculture Protection, storages of military belonging and Aswara Technical Institute belonging to the Technical Institutes Board. In the first site, the group met with the storages director inquiring about the total number of stores, the contents of each storage, the site subsidiary, the nature of the chemical materials received, their uses and the beneficiary bodies. The team also inquired about the changes that took place since 1998 and whether there is any relationship of the site with military bodies. Then, the team toured all stores facilities as it got acquainted with their contents in which it used through its tour a GPR device - ground portable radar for detecting extreme depth of ground to check the concrete ground constructed recently. The second site which is two shelters that belong to military, the team got acquainted with their contents and made a radar survey outside the shelters. Where as the third site toured quickly after the team demanded the opening of the departments but it was told the institute is in holiday (midterm vacation) and the keys are not available. So they only took a look through the departments windows and their openings. The visit lasted about (3) hours and the team returned back to the hotel.
