A statement by Spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs on (UNMOVIC),(IAEA) activities IRAQ MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS February 6, 2003
1. IAEA inspection team. A. Group I: A group consisting of one inspector, an Austrian national (Martin Norkel), set out from the Qanat Hotel at 9:00 a.m. He arrived at one of the Republican Guard’s camps, where some equipment and barrels were moved to one of the Atomic Energy Organization’s stores. The visit lasted for about (3) hours, after which the inspector headed back to the Hotel. B. Group II: A group consisting of (2) inspectors, headed by the Austrian (Andrew), set out from the Qanat Hotel at 9:15 a.m. The group reached Al-Shaikhly Stores which belongs to the Companies of the MIC, Ministry of Housing and Construction, Electricity Corporation and the Atomic Energy Organization, some 25km south of Baghdad. It checked and weighed the quantities of the tominine oil were found in the stores, as well as it checked and weighed the quantities of this oil in the labs. Then, the group visited the damaged reactors (both the French and the Russian). The visit lasted for approximately (2) hours, after which the group went back to the Hotel. C. Group III: A group consisting of (4) inspectors headed by the Russian (Klimetco), set out from the Qanat Hotel at 9:10 a.m. The group conducted a radio-metric survey for various areas which included the garage for transporting construction materials, which belongs to the Ministry of Trade, in Jurf Al-Naddaf, the stores of Sebba Nissan which belong to the Company of Agricultural supplies, the trucks that were stopping in front of the Industrial district on Baghdad- Kut road, the trucks that were stopping in front of Al-Suwaira grain stores and the trucks that were stopping in front and inside the workshop of the State Company for Grain Trade and Industry. The group conducted a radio-metric survey for the trucks that were stopping on Baghdad-Kut road. Then, it went back to the Hotel. 2. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Chemical). A team consisting of (6) inspectors, headed by the Austrian (Harold), set out from the Qanat Hotel at 8:45 a.m. It reached the Water and Sewage State Organization which belong to the Ministry of Interior Affairs. The team held a meeting with the Director General and asked him to give it an idea about the Organization and its tasks. It also inquired about the limits of the Organization’s responsibility, and whether this responsibility extends to cover Kurdistan’s Governorates, whether it has labs for quality control and whether the chlorine gas is used in one or two stages. Furthermore, the group asked about the sources of the chlorine gas and the quantities of this gas that have been used during the last two years, the sites that belong to the Organization and the examinations that are being made in its labs. The visit lasted for almost (3) hours, after which the team went back to the Hotel. 3. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Biological). A. Group I: A group consisting of (6) inspectors, headed by the American (Ark), set out from the Qanat Hotel at 8:30 a.m., and arrived at Al-Abraj Company for Alcohol (privet sector) in Khan Benni Sa’ad. As soon as the group reached that site, it demanded a speedy meeting with the Manager of the Company. Then, the group toured the sections of the Company, an activity that covered the stores, the brewing section, the maintenance workshop and the distilling section. The visit lasted for about one hour, after which the group headed back to the Hotel. B. Group II: A group consisting of (6) inspectors, headed by the English (Rojer) set out from the Qanat hotel at 8:40 a.m., and arrived at the Teaching Labs in Bab Al-Muadham. As soon as the group arrived there, it held a meeting with the head of the labs, during which it asked him about number of employees, aspects of cooperation with other parties, the labs, level of the students who are being trained in them, kinds of immunity examinations, methods of diagnosing viral and hereditary diseases,. The team also asked if there are anthrax infections and how cholera is diagnosed. Then, the group inspected all the labs, the cultural media and visited the tunnel that connects the hospitals in the compound. The visit lasted for some (3) hours, after which the group went back to the hotel. 4. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Missile). A. Group I: a group consisting of (8) inspectors, headed by the English inspector (Paul Kliford), set out from the Qanat Hotel at 8:30 a.m., and arrived at the site of Ibn Al-Haitham which belongs to Al-Carama State Company, of the formations of the MIC. The group held a meeting with the persons who are in charge of that site, and all the question raised by the group about the control and guidance devices, the activities carried out in this site, the manufactured structures and the assembled missiles were answered. Then, the group toured all the buildings and took photos for some of them from inside. The visit lasted for about (4) hours, after which the group went back to the Canal hotel. B. Group II: a group consisting of (4) inspectors, headed by the Bangladeshi inspector (Mohammed Sayf Al-Islam Mohammed), set out from the Qanat Hotel at 8:30 a.m., and arrived at the Military Engineering College which belongs to the Ministry of Defense. The group held a meeting with the Commander of the College, and put to him a number of questions about the nature of the College’s work, its aims, kinds of the experiences acquired, kind of degree awarded by it and its relation with industrial projects. Then, the group visited all the departments and labs of the college. The visit lasted for about (3) hours, after which the group went back to the Hotel. 5. UNMOVIC Joint Inspection Team (Baghdad). A team consisting of (8) inspectors, headed by the English inspector (Williams), set out from the Qanat Hotel at 8:25a.m, and arrived at the group of the aerial defence missiles in Al-Habanya, which belongs to the Ministry of Defense. The team held a meeting with the commander of the group and asked him about the number of the roofed stores, the number of the roofless yards and kinds of stockpiled missiles. Then, the team went into four groups which visited all the stores, yards, debris yards and destroyed places. In this inspection activity, an apparatus for chemical contamination examination was used, as well as the samples from inside the stores were taken. The visit lasted for about (4) hours, after which the team went back to the Hotel. 6. UNMOVIC Joint Inspection Team (Mousel). A team consisting of (13) inspectors, headed by the Swedish inspector (Awala), set out from Nineveh Palace Hotel at 8:30 a.m., and arrived at the Arab Company for Chemical and Detergents (co-ed sector) in Beji city, some 250km north of Baghdad. As the team reached there, it demanded for the site’s map and the production registers for the last (4) years. The registers were checked against the declaration submitted to the inspectors. Then, after this activity which lasted about (4) hours the team went back to the Hotel.
