A statement by Spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs on (UNMOVIC),(IAEA) activities IRAQ MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS February 4, 2003
1. IAEA Inspection Team: A. Group I: This group, led by the Austrian, Andro Witken, was consisted of (3) inspectors and arrive at Al-Mamoun Factory of Al-Rasheed State Company, one of the MIC’s companies, located some 50km south of Baghdad. The group visited the Company’s central warehouses, took a look at the received isolate batches and took samples. The visit took 2.5 hours, and then returned to Al-Qanat Hotel. B. Group II: This group, led by the Canadian Goerge Hely, was consisted of 10 inspectors, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00a.m. and arrived at the site of Al-Salam Factory occupied by military unit, which was visited yesterday by the biological group. The group performed a radiological survey. The visit took about 3.5 hours, and then the group returned to the Hotel. 2.UNMOVIC Inspection Team (biological): This 11- inspector team, which led by the Austrian Arden, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00a.m. and arrived at Al-Nasir State Company, one of the MIC’s companies, located in Al-Doura area, Baghdad. The team met the company’s Director General and inquired from him about the Company’s activity, PHD. degree holders, the techniques used in welding and whether they specialization in manufacturing coated tanks. The team inspected the Company’s factories and bankers, took photographs of some of the equipment and products and testing minerals device. The visit took about 3 hours, and then returned to the Hotel. 3.UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Missiles): A. Group I: This 5-inspector group, which was led by British, Steward, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00a.m. and was arrived at Al-Milad Factory of the Al-Harith State Company, one of the MIC’s companies. The group affixed tags on some of the ground-to-air missiles and lifted off tags from others. The visit took about 1.40 hours, and then returned to the Hotel. B. Group II: This 4- inspector group, which was led by the US Kinth Kroh, set off Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:00 a.m. and arrived at Al-Mamon Factory of Al-Rasheed State Company. The group met the Factory’s Manager and inquired about Al-Fath missile. Then the group visited the mechanical workshop of the rubber and the store of the chemical material, and then verified the labeled equipment. The visit took about 3.5 hours, then returned to the Hotel. C. Group III: This 4-inspector group was led by Mohamad Saif Al-Islam of Bangladesh. Set off Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00a.m. and arrived at Al-Rafah site of Al-Karamah State Company, one of the MIC’s companies. This site is located in Amiryat Al-Falouja some 70km. west of Baghdad. The purpose of the visit was to witness a restrain test for Al-Soumod missile; they watched the test and videotaped it. The visit took about 6 hours, then the group returned to the Hotel. 4. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Chemical): A. Group I: This 9-inspector group was led by the Irish Shein. Set off Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:15 a.m. and arrived at the State Company for the Agricultural Supplies, one of the Agricultural Ministry’s companies located in Al-Wazyria area of Baghdad. The group met the Company’s Director General and asked questions about his specialization, period of his stay at the Company, his position before that, the number of the personnel, number of post-graduate holders, number of pesticides stores, kinds of pesticides and what kind of diseases affect greatly the agricultural products. The group checked the sections of importation and the marketing and visited the departments of the financial and accounting affairs. The visit took about 4.5 hours, and then the group returned to the Hotel. B. Group II: This 7-inspector group was led by the Austrian Harald Marald. Set off Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00 a.m. and arrived at Al-Doura purification station, one of Baghdad Water Departments. They inquired about the purification process, the laboratory doing water analysis. The group took a field tour included the analysis lab, water pumps drawing river water, and the pools of sedimentation and purification. The visit took about one hour, then the group returned to the Hotel. 5. UNIMOVIC Joint Inspection Team (in Mosul): This 15-inspector team was led by the Swedish Arad. Set off Qas Nineveh hotel at 9:00 a.m. and arrived at the Sugar and Yeasts Factory in Mosul Province, one of Industry and Minerals Ministry’s factories. The team met the factory‘s Director General and some concerned personnel, inquired about the developments during the last 4 years, kinds of key products, whether there is certain mechanism for collecting swage beet, the rate of beet supply and the product improvements during the last 4 years. Declarations and tags were checked. The team took a field tour including all the Factory’s premises. The visit took about 3.5 hours, the team returned to the Hotel. 6. UNMOVIC Joint Inspection Team: A. Group I: This 11-inspector group set off Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:30 a.m. and arrived at an agricultural farm opposite Al-Taji Gas Factory some 20km. to the north of Baghdad. The group took a field tour . The group then went to Al-Taji ammunition depots some 35km. north of Baghdad and inspected kinds of ammunition using a chemical sensor device. The visit took about 5 hours. The group returned to the Hotel. B. Group II: This 6-inspector group was led by the American Jack. Set off Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:40 a.m. and arrived at Al-Taji ammunition depots, inquired about names of the personnel and asked about 4 empty warheads of Karrar 122mm. missile which Iraq has recently declared. They visited the depots and used the chemical checking devices. The visit took about 7 hours, and then they returned to the Hotel. C. Group III: Left Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:40 a.m. and arrived at farm belongs to one of the citizens in Taji area some 40km. north of Baghdad, took a look and headed for the ammunition depots of the Iraqi Air Force, asked about the ammunition kinds. The visit took about 6.5 hours, and then the group returned to the Hotel. 7. Aerial Reconnaissance Team: The team set off using vehicles, from Al-Qanat Hotel at 12:30 p.m. consisting of (12) inspectors headed by Gerhard Brand (Germany). The team made a tour included Al-Rasheed sub district and the neighboring Al-Yousfya sub district, then moved to Amriat Al-Faluja area, south of Baghdad and the way along side the Euphrates. After that, the team returned to Al-Qanat Hotel. The visit took (3) hours. 8. UNMOVIC requested to interview an Iraqi specialist. The NMD informed the specialist to be available at the designated time and date, also encouraged him to conduct this interview. The specialist didn’t refuse to have this interview, but he asked for two people from the NMD to attend the interview as witnesses. But the UNMOVIC refused. Also, this evening the UNMOVIC requested to interview another specialist and the NMD encouraged him. Details of this interview will be covered in tomorrow’s daily statement.
