A statement by Spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs on (UNMOVIC),(IAEA) activities

IRAQ MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

February 3, 2003

 

1. IAEA Inspection Team

Group I: It set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00a.m., consisting of (3) inspectors. It reached Aswera intersection, 35km south of Baghdad. The group made a radiological survey for the following sites; the Iraqi Company for Seeds Production, the Purification Factory (co-ed sector), a company for livestock production (private sector), a fish breeder which belongs to the Ministry of Agriculture, a military unit and Salman-pack area. The survey process lasted for (3) hours.

Group II: It set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:15a.m., consisting of (7) inspectors. It reached Ibn Al-Haitham site of Al-Karama State Company-MIC. The group visited all the site storages, checked the sealed equipment as it took photos for some of them and the main gate of the site as well.

The visit lasted for (3) hours. It returned to the Hotel.

2.UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Missiles)

Group I: It set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:15a.m., consisting of (6) inspectors. It reached Al-Qaqaa State Company-MIC. The group visited Al-Shaheed Majed Factory where it met with the Director and inquired about the process of producing the compound fuel as it also visited the buildings that have the compressors and checked the sealed equipment.

The visit lasted for (3) hours. The group returned to the Hotel.

Group II: It set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30a.m., consisting of (4) inspectors. It reached Al-Salam State Company-MIC, 20km north of Baghdad. The group met with the specialists where it inquired about the Company’s activities and made an inspection tour in the research labs & the electronic workshops.

The visit lasted for (3) hours. It returned to the Hotel.

Group III: It set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:40a.m., consisting of (4) inspectors. It reached Sa’ad State Company-MIC in Al-karrada area of Baghdad. The team met with the Director General and some of the specialists where it inquired about some of the projects that are carried out by the Company as it also visited a department there.

The visit lasted for (2) hours and (45) minutes. The group returned to the Hotel.

Group IV: It set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:40a.m., consisting of (10) inspectors. It reached Al-Quds Factory of Al-karama State Company-MIC. The group met with the Factory Director where it asked some technical questions concerning the Factory production. The group visited the specifications standard lab and the control & guide section as it checked the seals and the semi-annual declarations.

The visit lasted for (3) hours and (30) minutes. The group returned to the Hotel.

3.UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Biological)

Group I: It set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30a.m., consisting of (7) inspectors. It reached Al-Nidaa State Company-MIC in Azafaranya area, one of the suburbs of Baghdad. The group met with the Director where it inquired about the manufactured patterns in the Company. It also visited a square outside the Company belonging to Al-Numan Factory. The square contains various iron containers.

The visit lasted for (4) hours and (30) minutes. The group returned to the Hotel.

Group II: It set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:45a.m., consisting of (7) inspectors. It reached Al-Kendy College for Medicine. The group held a meeting with the Dean inquiring about the College departments. The questions were mainly about the unit for researching the diseases of hot areas, the activities of this unit and the number of those among the staff who have PhDs. The group went to the unit for diseases of hot areas, which belongs to the same College, in Al-Jadrya area where it asked about the unit’s activities and the sorts of the immunity studies.

The visit lasted for (4) hours. It returned to the Hotel.

Group III: It set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:40a.m., consisting of (9) inspectors. It reached Al-Salam Factory in Salman-Pack which is cancelled and a military unit is occupying the place currently. It inspected the disused buildings and the old labs building. It also inspected around the site buildings, carrying out a radiological survey for the depository’s ground and took photos of the food depository.

The visit lasted for (2) hours. It retuned to the Hotel.

Group IV: It set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00a.m., consisting of (5) inspectors. It reached the Department of Applied Science - University of Technology. The group met with the Department’s Head and inquired about the Biochemical Techniques Section, its establishment date, its faculty number and the nature of the subjects which are taught. The group also visited the Section’s labs.

The visit lasted for an hour. It returned to the Hotel.

4. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Chemical)

The team set out from Al-Qanat Hotel at 7:00a.m., consisting of (14) inspectors. It reached the Arab Company for Chemical Detergents in Beji. (joint - stock company). The team inquired about the changes that took place since 1998 up-to-date, the number of laborers and their specializations. The team also visited the production sites where it used a gas examining set as the team took (7) samples from various places of the site.

The visit lasted for (5) hours.

5. Aerial Reconnaissance Team

The aerial reconnaissance plane took off at 11:30a.m from Al-Rasheed Base (helicopter). It reached Baji Refinery and the above mentioned Chemical Detergents Company where the other team was there. The team took photos for the Refinery and the Company.

The reconnaissance team returned at 4:15p.m.
