A statement by Spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs on (UNMOVIC),(IAEA) activities

IRAQ MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

February 2, 2003

 

1. IAEA Inspection Team:

Two helicopters took off from Al-Rashid Airport. The team consisted of (7) inspectors, and arrived at Ukashat Mine, which belongs to Phosphate State Compnay, some 400 km To the west of Baghdad.

The team held a meeting with the director of the Mine and inquired about the party to which the Mine belongs, the number of staff, the technical specialities, the budget of the Mine, and the financing party. It also inquired about the purchases that took place during the last four years. Afterwards, the team paid a visit to the chemical laboratory and the site of using Al-Qaqaa explosive in the quarry. The visit lasted for nearly three hours, and then the team returned to Al-Rashid Airport.

2. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Chemical):

The team, consisting of (5) inspectors, set out of Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00 a.m., and arrived at Al-Wahdah Stores, which belongs to the State Company for Project of Irrigation and Reclamation, one of the companies of the Ministry of Irrigation. The Stores lie in Basmayah area, some 30 km to the east of Baghdad. The team had a look at all of the Stores, the sheds, and containers that are in the site.

The visit lasted for an hour, and then the team returned to Al-Qanat Hotel.

3. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Missiles):

A. Group I: The group, consisting of (6) inspectors, set out of Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30 a.m., and arrived at Al-Qaqaa State Company, one of MIC’s companies, some 50 km to the south of Baghdad.

The group paid a visit to Saad Factory, and met with its director. It inquired about the products of the Factory, the designing capacity, the proportions of the produced nitrite acid concentration. The group, also, paid a visit to the building of producing nitrite acid, the building of storing ammonia, and the mechanic workshop.

The visit lasted for two and a half hours, and then the group returned to Al-Qanat Hotel.

B.Group II: The group, consisting of (4) inspectors, set out at 8:30 a.m., and arrived at Al-Simoud Factory, which belongs to Al-Karamah State Company, one of MIC’s companies. The Factory lies in Abu Ghraib area, one of Baghdad’s suburbs.the group checked the devices and equipment of the Factory and paid a visit to all the buildings there.

The visit lasted for nearly three and a quarter hours, and then the group returned to Al-Qanat Hotel.

C. Group III: The group, consisting of (10) inspectors, set out of Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30 a.m., and arrived at Al-Milad State Company, one of MIC’s companies, some 30 km to the south of Baghdad. The group asked the specialists about the system of control and direction. It also paid a visit to some buildings and checked the declarations.

The visit lasted for nearly three and a quarter hours, and then the group returned to Al-Qanat Hotel.

4. UNMOVIC Inspection Team ( Airial Reconnaisance):

A helicopter which belongs to UNMOVIC took off from Al-Rashid Airport at 10:00 a.m., and reconnoitered some area in Ba’quba, Diyala Province where the helicopter flew above Al-Qadisiyya Company for Elecrical Industries and video taped it. Afterwards, it flew above Al-Muqdadiyya Adminstrative area, continued its video taping, and flew above Abu Saydah District. Later, the helicopter video taped military sites, and then retrned to Al-Muqdadiyya Adminstrative area. The arrival of the helicopter was parallel with the arrival of UNMOVIC jiont team at the area.

The reconnaisance and the video taping took about two hours, and then the helicopter returned to Al-Rashid Airport.

5. UNMOVIC Inspection Team:

A. Group I: The group, consisting of (11) inspectors, set out of the Canal Hotel at 8:40 a.m., and arrived at Abu Ghraib Dairy Factory, which belongs to the Ministry of Industrialization and Minerals. It lies in Abu Ghraib area, some 30 km to the south of Baghdad.

The group met with the director of the Factory and inquired about the examinations that are conducted in the control department, and about the kinds of chemical examinations that are conducted in the laboratories. Afterwards, the group paid a visit to the stores, production and control department, cooled rooms, the ruins yards, and the management.

The visit took three and a half hours, and then the group returned to Al-Qanat Hotel.

B. Gorup II: The group, consisting of (8) inspectors, set out of Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:45 a.m., and arrived at Al-Nu’man State Company, one of MIC’s companies, which lies in Al-Za’faraniyyah area.

The group held a meeting with the director of the Company and inquired about the most important products of the Company, whether production is currently suspended. It also inquired about the place of conducting field tests. Afterwards, the group toured inside the stores of the Company, had a look at their contencts and checked them.

The visit took nearly six hours, and then the group returned to Al-Qanat Hotel.

6. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Joint):

The team, consisting of (14) inspectors, set out of Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00 a.m., and arrived at the site of the Second Army Corps/ fuel accumulations, which belongs to the Ministry of Defense. The site lies in Al-Muqdadiyyah area – Diyala Province, some 150 km south of Baghdad. The team paid a visit to all the accumulations and tanks of fuel that belong to the site. These accumulations and tanks were video taped besides their being video taped from the air by helicopters. The video taping process continued for more than an hour and a half. Some samples were taken from the fuel of the accumulations.

The visit lasted for nearly four hours, and then the team returned to Al-Qanat Hotel.

7. The Joint UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Mosul):

The team, consisting of (11) inspectors, set out of Nineveh Palace Hotel at 9:00 a.m., and arrived at the University of Arbeel. The team held a meeting with the assistant of the University’s president and asked him a number of questions about the number of colleges four years ago, and the present number, whether there are chemical and biological departments in the College of Science, the party that finances the University, whether there is any relation with the universities of Iraq and the neighboring countries. Afterwards, the team paid a visit to the two departments of Biology and of Chemistry that belong to the College of Science. The visit took about four hours, and then the team returned to the Nineveh Palace Hotel.
