A statement by Spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs on (UNMOVIC),(IAEA) activities IRAQ MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS January 29, 2003
1. IAEA inspection team. Group I: Consisted of (3) inspectors, set off Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:15 a.m., and arrived at the State Company for geological survey-M.I.M., located near Al-Andulus square in Baghdad . The group met the Company’s liaison officer with the NMD and discussed the answers provided by the Company to the IAEA on the 22/1/2003. Also the group met with the Executive of the Commercial Department and took a look at the procurement and contracts box files. The group visited as well, the office of the State Company for Phosphate, existed there, saw some of the contracts for supplying material to the Phosphate Company. The visit took about 6 hours, the group then returned back to Al-Qanat Hotel. Group II (atomic energy): Consisted of (3) inspectors, and left Al-Qanat Hotel at 9:00 a.m. performed a radiological survey at Abu-Ghraib and Sadamiat Al-Faloga area (tourist site), then at Tarik military camp., located somewhere on Baghdad, Faloga road. The visit took about 4 hours, and then the group returned back to the Hotel. Group III (atomic energy): Consisted of 4 inspectors, set off Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30 a.m., arrived at Al-Kufa University and held a meeting with the President of the University, asked him about the date of occupying his post and the name of former president, the number of the students, those of postgraduate studies, the number of professors, the budge t of the University, the finance source and the number of colleges. Then the group held a meeting with the deans of the colleges of Education, Science and Engineering, and inquired about the number of students, the number of postgraduate students and the number of the departments, their names, whether the professors have researches, the activities of the department. The group also visited the departments of Physics in Al-Qaid College for Female Education and the College of Science, checked the radiation resources existed there, also visited, for the same purpose, the College of Medicine, the Mechanic Engineering Department of the College of Engineering, to have a look at the laboratories. The group made a radilogical survey at the laboratories of the College of Education. The visit took about four hours and a half, and then the group returned to the Hotel. 2. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Joint): Consisted of (10) inspectors, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:45 a.m., and arrived at Al-Falluja Ammunition Stores of the Ministry of Defense. They met with the commander and asked him about the date of establishing these stores and the existence of some kinds of ammunition. The team, afterwards, inspected some stores using chemical pollution measuring apparatus during their visit. The visit took about four hours, and then the team returned to the Hotel. 3. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Biological): A. Group I: Consisted of (6) inspectors. They left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:15 a.m., and arrived at Eba Center for Agricultural Researches in Abu Ghraib area. The group met one of the specialists in plant diseases, asked him about his work in the Center, the methods of potatoes sterilizing, whether he is working on wheat diseases. They visited the laboratory of potato growing and the laboratory of agricultural protection. Then, they headed towards the husbandry station at Abu Ghraib area which belongs to the same center, asked the station's director about the nature of the station's work and about the kind of chickens they are breeding, the capacity of the incubators and that of the farms. Then, the group went to the laboratory of animal physiology of the same center, located at Al-Shou'la area. The visit took about two hours and a half, and then the group returned to the Hotel. B. Group II (Biological): Consisted of (8) inspectors, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:45 a.m., and arrived at Chemical Engineering Department in the University of Technology. The group inquired about the department finance and whether there are among the department personnel, specialists in micro-biology. Then, the group visited the laboratories and the stores and took samples from the drying apparatus. The visit took about two hours and a half, and then the group returned to the Hotel. C.Group III (Biological): Consisted of (8) inspectors, left the Hotel at 8:50 a.m., and arrived at Al-Dabbash Warehouses, which belong to the State Company for Medicines Marketing of the Ministry of Health. The group met the warehouses’ director and asked him about the nature of the work of these warehouses, whether there are cultural media, also asked the director of maintenance section and the nature of workshop activity,asked the director of the customs section about the nature of the Warehouses work and about the machines of trucks arrival from Tribail Border Point. The group visited the accounts section, entered into the computers there and draw information pertaining the work of the Warehouses, also visited the customs importation section and the workshops of the maintenance in the Warehouses. The visit took about three hours, and then the group returned to the Hotel. 4. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Missiles): Consisted of (5) inspectors, left Al-Qanat Hotel at 8:30 a.m., and arrived at Al-Ma'moun Factory which belongs to Al-Rashid State Company, one of MIC, and is located some 50 km south of Baghdad. The group received the samples which the team will analyze outside Iraq to verify its construction. These samples are from the solid fuel special for Al-Fath missile. They also visited the buildings. The visit took about an hour and a half, and then the team returned to the Hotel. 5. UNMOVIC Inspection Team (Chemical): Consisted of (15) inspectors, took off on board of (2) helicopters at 7:00 a.m. from Al-Rashid Airport. After more than one and a half hour flight towards Kirkouk Province, the team failed to land in an area near the Province, due to bad weather. Then, the visit was cancelled and the two helicopters returned to Al-Rashid Airport.
