NMD Director-General Holds Press Conference

IRAQI MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

February 23, 2003

NMD Director-General, Husam Mohammad Ameen stressed that inspections during the past three months proved Iraq’s credibility and disclosed US and Britain claims on Iraq’s possession of WMD.

During a press conference today, Mr. Ameen pointed out that Iraq was studying the demand of UNMOVIC Head on the destruction of Al-Soumoud (2) missiles, expressing hope to reach a decisive solution with UNMOVIC experts without interference of any party.

He said that Al-Soumoud (2) missiles were not regarded as WMD. On the 19th of this month, Iraq addressed a letter to Hans Blix asking to send experts to put an end to this issue.

He added that the UNMOVIC and the IAEA inspectors carried out (780) inspections without prior notice including (635) sites, (145) of which were not formerly included in inspections.

Concerning the inspectors’ departure, Mr. Husam said that there were no indications of  their departure.
