Federal Foreign Minister Fischer meets UN Secretary-General Annan Federal Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer met Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, in Frankfurt today (4 March) for talks. The exchange of views focussed on current developments in the Middle East peace process, the situation in the Balkans, in Iraq, in Afghanistan and in the Congo.

The UN Secretary-General briefed Federal Minister Fischer on his talks with Iraqi Foreign Minister Al-Sahaf in New York. Fischer and Annan agreed that the conflict concerning Iraq cannot be solved by military means and advocated a political initiative on the part of the UN Security Council to change the sanctions regime and enforce an effective arms control regime.
