STATEMENT BY JOSCHKA FISCHER
GERMAN FEDERAL FOREIGN MINISTER

GERMAN FOREIGN MINISTRY

May 22, 2003

"The Federal Government welcomes the resolution on Iraq adopted today by the Security Council. It provides a good basis for the concrete improvement of the conditions of the Iraqi population and for the stabilization of the political situation in Iraq.

The United Nations will be of central importance in implementing these goals. The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General will have an independent role in promoting the political process to form an internationally recognized, representative Iraqi government. On the economic side, the resolution provides for a high level of transparency and information through its creation of an Advisory and Monitoring Board.

The Security Council will be kept continuously informed by the Allies and the UN Secretary-General about the resolution's implementation and will review any need for modification within a year."
