STATEMENT BY THE SPOKESPERSON

FRENCH MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

September 25 , 2002

The British government published a report yesterday about the Iraqi threat. It asserted among other things that Iraq is continuing its efforts to obtain nuclear weapons, has proven chemical and biological capabilities, and is deploying ballistic missiles.

We have taken note of the British government's assessments and are in the process of comparing them with our own.

I'd like to remind you what the president said in Copenhagen yesterday. We had no knowledge, naturally, of the evidence that has just been made public by Tony Blair. Naturally we had suspicions, if not proof, of these problems. And that moreover is one of the reasons we're pressing hard for the inspectors to return and for them to have all the means necessary to see what is happening in Iraq, whether or not there are weapons of mass destruction, of whatever kind, and if need be, if there are, to ensure that they are destroyed in accordance with their mission.
