STATEMENT BY THE SPOKESPERSON

FRENCH MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

January 31, 2003

Excerpts

Q - Four or five EU countries have signed a letter. Does Paris wish to meet the ten others to possibly sign another letter? There's an impression that only Germany and France are on the ropes?

Did we give the least impression in our reactions of being on the ropes? Not at all. I believe I said only yesterday that all sources of enrichment, all the contributions that might enrich the common position of the EU on Iraq are useful or could be so. I'd like to recall that there's a common EU position which is recent, it dates from last Monday, and that the common position marks the state of the common deliberations of the 15, whether it is Spain, or German, Italy, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France or others. That's where we are at this stage. I refer you to the Greek presidency regarding any initiative on its part.
