STATEMENT BY THE SPOKESPERSON

Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Beijing, China

20 January 2000

QUESTION: What is China's position on the choice of the chairman of the new UN weapons inspection team in Iraq?

SPOKESPERSON: We maintain that, in order not to repeat the mistake of the UNSCOM, the new chairman should have necessary political judgement, certain experience in disarmament, capability of democratic administration and a strong sense of disciple. He should report relevant information objectively and truthfully without making unauthorized decisions on major issues.

Given the difference among the permanent members of the UN Security Council over the choice of Mr. Rolf Ekeus by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, we hope that the Security Council will continue its consultation and find a choice acceptable to all sides at an early date.
